Salicylic Acid In Skin Care

When it comes to acne, pimples, or acne, the first thing that comes to mind is salicylic acid. Many of the cleansers, moisturizers, and serums we use contain salicylic acid. But do we know how much or how to use it? Among the ingredients that work well against acne, salicylic acid is at the top of the list. Using salicylic acid on acne will dry up the acne overnight and make it less noticeable.

But what does salicylic acid actually do? How do we get the benefits of salicylic acid? Who can use it and who cannot? Why is salicylic acid so popular for reducing acne? Today I will share with you the A–Z of salicylic acid.

What exactly is Salicylic Acid?

To understand how salicylic acid works, we first need to know what it actually is. It’s a bit complicated, though. But when it comes to the ingredients of skin care products, it is better for us to know a little about them.

We often see two types of acids in skin care products.

Beta-Hydroxy Acid (BHA)
Alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA)

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid. Beta-hydroxy acid is oil-soluble, so it can penetrate through the skin’s lipid layer into pores and unclog clogged pores. Both alpha and beta hydroxy acids exfoliate the skin, but AHA is water-soluble, while BHA is oil-soluble.

Salicylic Acid Uses and Benefits in Skin Care

Salicylic acid penetrates deep into our skin to target acne and slowly dry up acne. Salicylic acid has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce painful red acne quickly. Learn about its uses and benefits in skin care.

1) Works as chemical exfoliator

It exfoliates our skin by removing dead skin cells and softening the skin. Sometimes, while applying makeup, external dust accumulates and clogs the pores of the skin. Salicylic acid helps unclog pores.

2) Takes Care of Acne-Prone Skin

As mentioned earlier, it removes pollution from skin pores. Keeping pores clean reduces the chance of pimples or acne. It also helps reduce cystic acne due to its antibacterial properties.

3) What is the most effective method for reducing blackheads and whiteheads?

Blackheads and whiteheads are often seen on our nose, cheeks, and snout. Regular use of any products containing salicylic acid can get rid of them. Because salicylic acid deeply cleans the skin from the inside by reducing the oiliness of the skin, it plays an effective role in reducing blackheads and whiteheads.

Those who should not use salicylic acid

If salicylic acid is used in excess, the first side effects are redness and excess dry skin. In many cases, if you use more than the specified amount, the skin becomes sensitive. So those with dry or sensitive skin should not use salicylic products.

Also, those who are pregnant or on any medication, should consult a doctor regarding the use of active ingredients. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, small doses of salicylic acid are safe to use during pregnancy.

What products can we use as beginners?

Which salicylic acid products we use for our acne will depend on whether we have too much or too little acne. Usually 0.5 to 2% salicylic acid is used in skin care products, and this amount is safe.

Various brands of cleansers, moisturizers, serums, and chemical exfoliators that contain salicylic acid are available. As a beginner, we can use a cleanser with salicylic acid for acne prone skin. But three things must be kept in mind.

If using salicylic acid, sunscreen must be applied.
A good moisturizer should be used according to the skin type.
After age 20, you can put serum in your skin care, but not before.

My Experience

For my oily and acne-prone skin, I use Cosrx Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser. It contains 0.5% salicylic acid, which helps control excess sebum on the skin as well as reduce acne breakouts. I use it three to four days a week, only at night. I used to have problems with closed comedones, which have reduced a lot with this cleanser.

So, we definitely understand that salicylic acid is a life-saving ingredient for acne-prone skin. For those who suffer from acne, add a product containing salicylic acid to their skin care regimen with the advice of a beauty expert. And yes, don’t forget to apply sunscreen!
